Virtual Summer Programs

Experience the nationally recognized BASIS Curriculum through our virtual summer programs! Taught by our very own world-class Subject Expert Teachers, these online academic camps are a wonderful way to keep your child engaged all summer long. Choose from a variety of for-credit academic courses as well as enrichment courses, all from the comfort of your home. From building real-world application skills in Algebra and Geometry, exploring worlds of living organisms in biology, becoming immersed in film history, and much more, students will enhance their love of learning and keep their content knowledge and critical-thinking skills sharp. Academic programs are open for Rising Grades 3-12 (depending on the course) and in majority will run in a virtual modality this year.

Summer Program Basics

All of our sessions are open to any interested students. We have a variety of programs available for elementary, middle, and high school students. Students have access to a number of summer activities that are both enriching and academic. Create your own BASIS Independent Schools summer camp experience – choose one or a few sessions that work for your schedule, or try them all!

DEPOSITS

A $75 non-refundable deposit is required for each course. Deposit amounts will be deducted from the program fees. Please see Program/Course Changes below for our one-time complimentary deposit transfer policy.

TUITION FEES AND BALANCES

Tuition fees are as listed and on our website. The balance of fees for summer programs will be automatically withdrawn on May 1 from the credit card on file.

Priority Registration Discounts
  • Receive a $50 discount when you register for 2 courses per student; $75 discount when you register for 3 courses per student; $100 discount when you register for 4 or more courses per student by 11:59 PM PST on March 15.
  • All courses need to be purchased in one transaction to be eligible for the discounts.
PROGRAM/COURSE CHANGES

There will be one complimentary program/course change allowed by April 28. During this complimentary change, your initial $75 deposit will be transferred to the new program/course without any additional charge.

Any additional changes, or any changes made after April 28 will incur a $25 charge to each transaction. No changes are permitted after April 28.

REFUND POLICY
  • Until April 28: Refunds are permitted, minus the $75 non-refundable deposit.
  • After April 28: Refunds are no longer permitted.

In the event that a course is canceled due to low enrollment, the full amount (including the non-refundable deposit), minus a $25 processing fee, will be refunded. There will also be no tuition refunds or tuition transfers for any reason other than course cancellation.

Deposits and program fees are non-refundable under any and all circumstances and cannot be transferred to another session or another student. This includes, but is not limited to, absence(s), withdrawal before the end of the program, and disruptive behavior or other misconduct.

Attendance Policy for For-Credit Academic Courses

  • Students must inform the teacher in advance before missing any class
  • Students may miss no more than 5 days if enrolled in any for-credit course, with the exception of Economics, in which students may miss no more than 3 days

For-Credit Academic Courses

The following Math courses are offered both for-credit and enrichment and will run concurrently. For-credit sections are open to non-BASIS Independent students as well as currently enrolled BASIS Independent students who have advancement approval. For-credit students are eligible for full credit upon successful completion of the course when they are able to demonstrate subject mastery. Please consult your individual BASIS Independent School to determine if you have earned credit for the course. Enrichment classes are open to all students. The following Elective courses including Economics are open to students entering grades 10-12 in the fall of 2023 and credit will be awarded. Intro to Programming is open to students entering grades 9-12 but only students entering grades 10-12 will receive full credit. Please note, BASIS Independent Schools will award academic credit for the list of for-credit courses below. If you are not a current BASIS Independent student, it is up to the discretion of your child's school to accept this credit.

    Description
    Pre-Algebra: This course includes concepts typical of this type of course and also topics from geometry, discrete mathematics, and probability and statistics. At the end of the course, students are well-versed in areas of: fractions, decimals, mixed numbers, positive and negative numbers, order of operations, percentages, proportions, ratios, divisibility, rounding, place value, unit conversions, scientific notation, and data representation, algebraic representation, and solving real-world problems.

  • Algebra I/Geometry

    Description
    Algebra and Geometry I: This course covers all of the traditional first-year algebra topics while helping students build higher-order thinking skills, real-world application skills, reasoning, and an understanding of interconnecting math strands. The class focuses on multiple representations of algebraic thinking: verbal, numerical, symbolic, and graphical. Topics covered include: algebra foundations; basic geometric concepts; functions and relations; linear equations; polynomials; rational expressions and functions; inequalities; systems of equations and inequalities; radical expressions and functions; quadratic equations; absolute-value equations and inequalities; and probability and data analysis. Real-world applications and continual practice/review are fundamental parts of the class and are important for mastery of the material.

  • Algebra II/Geometry

    BASIS Independent students must have completed Algebra I/Geometry or its equivalent and have advancement approval for FOR-CREDIT. This course will be offered in an online format.

    Description
    This is the second part in a series of algebra and geometry courses. Students will continue working on concepts introduced in Algebra 1/Geometry, but more in-depth. After mastering topics introduced in this course, students should be able to solve equations and inequalities with absolute value quadratic and logarithmic equations, and work with complex numbers and trigonometric functions of right triangle. Also, geometry will be incorporated and the equivalent of formal geometry will be concluded. Students will be introduced to proofs in geometry with similar and congruent figures, circles and their parts, lines, and planes.

  • Economics

    For students entering grades 10 – 12 in the fall of 2023. This course will be offered in an online format.

    Description
    The summer economics course will introduce students to the concepts of economics. This includes learning about many of the basic models in economics such as supply and demand and how specific markets and economies behave. The course will take some key elements from both microeconomics (individual and firm analyses) and macroeconomics (nationwide analyses). By the end of the course, students will be economically literate. They will be able to understand how our world works from the viewpoint of an economist.

  • Film Studies

    For students entering grades 10 – 12 in the fall of 2023. High School credit will only be awarded to students who take this course when they are in rising grade 10 or higher. This course will be offered in an online format.

    Description:
    Film Studies provides an overview of film history from the invention of motion picture technology to the present day. This course is broad, both chronologically and geographically, incorporating many foreign language films while focusing on the history of the American motion picture as a frame of reference. There are six major components engaged throughout the year: the evolution of the technology and its connection with major historical movements; analysis of film utilizing key terminology from films studies and theory; critique of social issues such as gender, class, race, and politics in film; creative production of a short film and exhibition in a festival; publication of a contemporary film review; and a film exhibition and discussion with an audience. In summary, film studies students will acquire language to critique historical, theoretical, technical, and social issues in film, create a short film for exhibition in a campus film festival, and generate a film review blog shared with the campus community. This course meets the UC A-G criteria for a Visual and Fine Arts credit.

  • Introduction to Business

    For students entering grades 10 – 12 in the fall of 2023. High School credit will only be awarded to students who take this course when they are in rising grade 10 or higher. This course will be offered in an online format.

    Description
    Introduction to Business provides an overview of starting a business, the types of businesses that exist, and the challenges that businesses face in our current economy. This course will teach students the basics of starting a business by having them write a startup business plan. They will have to name their business, create a marketing plan, hire employees and figure out how to pay them, court investors, and plan for a sustainable future.   • Empowering Entrepreneurs

    For students entering grades 10 – 12 in the fall of 2023. BASIS Independent students must have completed Introduction to Business.     Description
    This course is designed to empower entrepreneurial literacy among high school students.

    Students will synthesize the aspects of entrepreneurship in teams by working with their instructors and local entrepreneurs.     Description
    This elective course serves as a pre-AP Java programming course. Students are introduced to the Java development cycle, object-orientation, and control structures. Students learn about primitive data types and their wrapper classes, operators, data structures such as arrays and lists, and special topics. The course also emphasizes the problem solving aspects of programming. Concepts covered in this course are further developed as students progress through the computer science discipline. Completion of this course fulfills the prerequisite to enroll in AP Computer Science A class.

    Description
    This program focuses on learning technical skills in various sports. The students will rotate through a daily schedule that includes running, exercise, skill development, and competition. Throughout the summer, students will build confidence in their technique and play various sports. They will learn about the importance of sportsmanship and teamwork in all aspects of their training and physical play. By the end of the summer, the students will have learned proper mechanics, teamwork, sportsmanship, and high-level skills.

  • Digital Art

    For students entering grades 10 – 12 in the fall of 2023.  High School credit will only be awarded to students who take this course when they are in rising grade 10 or higher. This course will be offered in-person at the BASIS Independent Silicon Valley Upper Campus. (1290 Parkmoor Ave, San Jose, CA 95126)

    Description
    Students will investigate and develop their 2D and 3D art-making skills using Digital Software.

    The course will focus heavily on foundational art skills and how it applies to a digital platform. Students will explore the pros and cons of doing art digitally and have an understanding of how it applies to the current trends of art. Students must have at least one drawing software (Photoshop, Procreate, Sketchbook, etc.) installed and hardware for means of drawing digitally (Graphics/Drawing Tablets, iPads with stylus/Apple Pencil, etc.). Students can work on Laptops and/or iPads. The course projects will involve realism as well as more stylized and abstract forms of expression. This course is approved to meet the UC A-G criteria for a Visual and Fine Arts credit.

    Required materials
    There are many options for software and hardware, and any combination will work for the class. Some software will be subscription based (For example, for Photoshop, you could subscribe to Adobe’s single app price which would be about $15/month for a year). There are also free software and free trials out there as well. As for hardware, the lowest graphics/drawing tablet to connect via USB, runs about $20, but that is well below the average.  IPads and various tablets will also have a stylus and apps that will work for the class. Please check for compatibility with your devices before purchasing.

Science Enrichment

  • Biology Week 1

    For students entering grades 7 – 8 in the fall of 2023. This course will be offered in an online format.

    Description:
    This one-week biology course covers grades 6 and 7 and introduces students to the cellular world, specifically how cells come together in billions of different combinations to produce the enormous variety of life on this planet. After learning what it means to be a biologist – to not only ask questions about the living world around oneself, but within oneself as well – students will explore and explain the underlying mechanisms that govern the functioning of all living organisms. By the end of this course, students should not only have a baseline knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, but also understand how humans compare and contrast with our distant relatives, the Plant Kingdom.

  • Biology Week 2

    For students entering grades 9 in the fall of 2023. This course will be offered in an online format.

    Description:
    This one-week biology course covers grade 8 and will further students’ comprehension of cells by learning about the cellular processes in-depth and -the maintenance of homeostasis. This course will dive into the details of the biochemistry of carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids. Cellular transport and membrane structure are emphasized. Plant processes like photosynthesis are studied at a molecular level. Students will learn all basic reactions occurring in the process of cellular respiration. Cell division, Genetics, DNA structure, DNA replication, transcription, and translation are studied in depth. Evolutionary and ecological concepts will be reinforced especially in the context of genetics. This course is an excellent preparatory course for Honors Biology.

  • Chemistry

    Description
    In the summer chemistry program, students will be introduced to measurements and significant figures, atomic structure, types of matter, physical and chemical changes, bonding and chemical reactions. They will learn how to read the periodic table, name simple ionic and covalent compounds and do chemical calculations involving moles and Avogadro’s number. The instruction will be a mix of hands-on activities, guided inquiry, lecture, and lab experiments.

  • Physics

    For students entering grades 7 – 9 in the fall of 2023. This course will be offered in an online format.

    Description
    First Time Physics teaches the essential definitions and descriptions of classical physics in the areas such as motion, forces, Newton’s laws, momentum, energy and electrostatics.  Mathematically, our course will primarily use three variable equations with basic algebra. Students must clearly solve these equations for missing variables and use proper units and notation.  The core focus of First Time Physics is building fluent verbal descriptions of physical systems as well as learning fundamental rules for solving problems in classical physics.  The course prepares students for the coming year’s most challenging topics such as 2-D vectors, 2-D kinematics, 2-D force analysis, conservation of energy, conservation of momentum and electrostatics.

  • Essay Writing Blueprint

    For students entering grades 5 – 8 in the fall of 2023. This course will be offered in an online format.

    Description
    Writing is an essential skill for all middle school students to use in their classes.  This Essay Writing Blueprint course offers younger students a chance to develop their writing skills in a fun week-long writing course.  Students will practice writing paragraphs and even short essays about different topics, including many topics of their own choosing!  Our time will be spent on building students’ abilities, confidence, and enjoyment in writing of all kinds.
