• Project Title: The Fight Against Fake News: A Solution to the Spread of Misinformation

  • BASIS Advisor: Ms. Bhattacharya

  • Internship Location: Hewlet Packard Enterprise

  • Onsite Mentor: Ms. Mamta Narain

Fake news is a subject that perpetuates life today; it is impossible to avoid after scandals such as the Cambridge Analytica leak. With the rise of social media, the concept of fake news has been pushed forward, transforming from a rare Internet phenomenon to an angry, journalistic term used by politicians. Having grown to be one of the greatest threats of the twenty-first century, fake news and purposeful misinformation is becoming even more heavily scrutinized. With this dangerous development on the Internet, my goal is to create an accessible fake news detector. By working with my advisor an expert in AI creation and usage at Hewlett Packard, I seek to study machine learning, a technique where machines are trained to detect patterns and sort data into distinct groups. After gathering several articles and sorting them into appropriate categories, I will feed them to my algorithm, and my detector will be able to differentiate between different types of articles in a real-world practice. With this fake news detector, I hope that I can make the Internet safer for users everywhere.
