• Project Title: The Extent of Artificial Intelligence in Games

The goal of my project is to research how games can be customized according to players’ behaviors. By integrating artificial intelligence (AI) and game design, games exceed their potential of entertainment and interact with each user. My final products are two versions of a completed game: one consisting of AI programs and the other without. For the AI version, non-player characters (NPCs) can make different responses every time and have different placements. In the end, players will share their opinions of the games. I will conduct my research at UC Santa Cruz, and will use a game design platform, Unity, which I enabled to build my game in 3D. I am mostly relying on my onsite advisors to guide me through the process of making the game. In the first few weeks, I will construct the linear version of my game (the non-AI version), learning most of the programming through online courses. Having this first version as a base for the AI version, I could easily make duplications and readjust the NPCs character movement and responses. Adding multiple endings for the second version, it will become a non-linear game. As a prediction of the players’ responses, players should be more satisfied with the game incorporating AI system over the linear version. My exploration of integration between game design and AI creates further interactions with the player. AI is a relatively new field and many game companies are adding similar features thanks to the potential benefits of machine learning.
