• Project Title: The Missing Link: Demystifying Cancer for Teens

  • BASIS Advisor: Dr. Murthy

  • Internship Location: AT & T

  • Onsite Mentor: Mr. Nam Nguyen

The teenage years are filled with hectic moments, from beginning high school and going through puberty, to applying and starting college to pursue a passion. When cancer is added into the mix, an adolescent’s world can descend into total chaos. Despite the distress that cancer can cause an adolescent however, the discussion and access of information on adolescent cancer is still limited compared to those of other age groups. Through my project, I aim to bring this limited information to adolescent acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) and melanoma patients in a simple, accurate, and easily accessible format in a mobile app and website. As this is an independent project, I will be conducting it at my external advisor’s office and wherever else we can meet. The construction of my mobile app and website will be done at my external advisor’s office so I can obtain his help directly when needed. After constructing the app, I plan to test it on 5–10 adolescents and get their feedback to make the app more user friendly for its intended audience; I overall hope to give adolescent leukemia and melanoma patients better access to the information that they want or need in their fight against one of the deadliest diseases in the world.
