Slowly But Surely

Apr 16, 2019

Hello, hello!

Yes, I know this post is 1 day late, but it wouldn’t be my blog if the posts were consistent.

Now that that’s out of the way, I’m glad to tell you I’m making progress with my project! Whether or not it’s ‘great’ progress is debatable but I’m happy with where I am. Currently, I don’t vehemently hate my pilot, my advisor has recommended I look into student screenwriting competitions, and I’ve finally got a grip on formatting!

Now that I’ve got a story I’m happy with, I’ve been working with Roslind on tweaking the dialogue and adjusting the timing. One issue Roslind pointed out with my dialogue was that it was too on the nose. Similar to my earlier drafts, information is too obviously given and audiences aren’t dumb. One trademark of the 18th Century was the veiled insults and elegantly delivered snark, so it would only make sense that a show set in the 18th Century should feature that kind of language. So for the rest of the week, I’ll be working on refining the dialogue.

In addition to adjusting the dialogue, I’ll also be looking into competitions I can submit my work to! So far, I have a list of 16 possible competitions/workshops I can participate in which I want to narrow down to 5-10. I honestly don’t know if my work is good enough to place, much less win, any of these competitions, but hey, no harm in trying.

I’m so proud of myself for making it this far. A year ago, this project was just a vague idea I had late one night and the thought that I could be entering it in a competition soon is…hard to believe.

That’s about it for this week, I’ve just been writing and researching. While doing that, I’ve been listening to ‘Ashamed’ by Omar Apollo from his new album Friends. It’s so funky and very 90s and I highly recommend!

In other news, guess who’s officially a Bruin!? That’s right, your local screenwriter has committed to UCLA Class of 2023!
