The One with an Introduction

Feb 28, 2019

Hey Guys! Welcome to my Senior Project Blog!

My project is called “Causes of a Broken Heart: Analyzing the Effects of Sirtuin-6 on Calcific Aortic Valve Disease”. Before I get excited and use too many exclamation points and complicated terminology to explain what my project is about, I wanted to tell you how I chose this project and what it means to me.

I have always been fascinated by the heart. Aside from being one of the most vital parts of our body, the little fist-sized organ is strong enough to pump 7600 liters of blood every single day (and definitely hits the gym more than me). I have made several working models of the hearts out of jugs and tubes and spent countless hours reading cardiology research on PubMed. Instead of just passively reading those articles I read online, I made it my goal to have my name as first author on a cardiology research paper.

So, over summer, the heart-loving nerd in me took me to Rochester, Minnesota to conduct research at the Mayo Clinic instead of bingeing TV at home (just kidding, I totally binged 14 seasons of Grey’s Anatomy in my apartment in Rochester haha). For six weeks in Dr. Jordan D. Miller’s lab, I researched the specific effects of the Sirtuin-6 gene on Calcific Aortic Valve Disease. During my time in the lab, I compiled my data and created a scientific research poster. However, I didn’t want this experience to end with just a research poster. So, for my senior project, I am taking it one step further: I will write a research manuscript detailing the research and publish it in the scientific community!

In my next blog posts, I will be explaining how this project unfolded from beginning to end. For now, I will leave you with a picture of an excited Sahi about to start research at Mayo 🙂

This sounds like an amazing continuation of your research in Rochester! I can’t wait to hear more about your research.
