Week 1: Planning Ahead

Feb 22, 2019

For the next twelve weeks, I will be working on an abridged initiative to incentivize water conservation by monitoring consumption using sensors on specific water-intensive appliances. I have broken the project down into three distinct parts: building the hardware, developing a neatly organized front-end, and implementing the product in a study.

On the first day of my internship at Qolsys, a home automation and security company, I gathered 5 people around the office with various fields of expertise in a formal meeting where I went over my goals and my projected steps of achieving them in the next six months. My external advisor, David Laone, offered very valuable advice on maximizing output by making my project a bit more practical for the limited time frame. Everyone pitched in to propose ideas for storing the data effectively and presenting it digestibly, and I revised my agenda to incorporate those suggestions.

I spent the rest of the week finding the optimal sensors to order for testing next week, and began familiarizing myself with the React JavaScript library for use along with Google Firebase for storing and processing the sensor data. I’m really excited to experiment with different setups next week and write the skeleton code for the interface based on the testing data. See you soon!

    Hi Abhi,

This project seems to be off to a very promising start. Along with the hardware and software for your sensors, we should start discussing what types of motivation and incentives you will offer. We also need to determine the sample sizes for each group and how we will compare them. This can be done once you have volunteers to participate.
Sounds like your internship is off to a great start. Don’t forget to include research throughout. See ya later this week.

    Nice one Abhi!
I can’t wait to see how you and other engineers contribute to the “greener” modern lifestyle with your design!
