Mr. Small

History Teacher

From 2005 to 2009, Mr. Small attended the University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Science Education and a minor in History. He is currently enrolled in a distance-learning program with the University of Bath in the UK for a Master in Education in Educational Management and Leadership.

As a Social Studies Subject Expert Teacher for 6th grade World History, 7th grade U.S. History, and AP European History Mr. Small’s goals at BASIS Independent Silicon Valley are to ensure all students are successful in his class and to have fun doing it!

Mr. Small chose to work at BASIS Independent because of “its reputation for academic rigor and excellence. I wanted to work with the best teachers, for the best students, at the best school, so BASIS Independent was an easy choice.” He continues, “I have a social responsibility to see my students thrive. Learning does not happen in a vacuum. I aim to ensure a sense of community and responsibility. I want students to feel that they have a role to play and a contribution to make. In order to make responsible citizens of the world, I want students to feel that their abilities are valued and included in the process.”

Before moving to California, Mr. Small was a teacher in Japan from 2010 to 2013 and in Germany from 2013 to 2016. “I love to travel! I have been all around the world, but some of the unusual places I’ve been are the Demilitarized Zone in Korea and Chernobyl Exclusion Zone in Ukraine. I also love musicals, seeing new movies, and swing dancing,” says Mr. Small.
